About the Role

Muon Space is seeking an experienced Portfolio Manager to lead our growing portfolio of various environmental monitoring, government and commercial missions. This position will initially own and drive individual missions, with the opportunity to scale into building and leading a team of mission managers for our expanding portfolio. As the Portfolio Manager, you will be a vital member of the Mission Engineering team, collaborating closely with Muon Space's systems, hardware, software, business, legal, finance, and operations departments.

In this role, you will delight our customers and users by delivering high-quality satellite solutions on time and on budget while meeting our contractual obligations. Your deep background in space payloads combined with strong systems engineering and program management expertise will enable you to understand how all components integrate into successful mission execution, translating that knowledge into well-organized roadmaps, schedules, and budgets that you track throughout each program's lifecycle. This role will initially focus on proposing and developing proof of concept and missions, and evolve into a franchise of repeated launch of satellite products to form operational constellations which will be a distinct profit and loss (P&L) center over which you will have authority and responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Mission Management: Initially own and drive mission management for our satellite development programs, including efforts with NRO, SDA, and others.
  • Portfolio Growth: Build and expand the mission portfolio over time, including developing a mission management team to support multiple concurrent programs
  • Technical Leadership: Partner with Systems, Hardware, and Software teams on mission roadmap development, leveraging your background in space payloads
  • Program Execution: Maintain full accountability for successful execution (cost, schedule, technical) of multiple mission contracts, providing regular program updates and financial forecasts
  • Customer Engagement: Represent Muon Space to government and commercial customers, ensuring their needs are understood and incorporated into mission planning
  • Team Development: Build and mentor a growing team of mission managers specialized mission capabilities as portfolio expands
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the development of Muon Space's program and mission management processes
  • Strategic Growth: Define and execute growth strategies for current and follow-on contracts, supporting business development through proposals and customer engagement

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience in program management of complex technical system development, with specific focus on space payloads
  • 7+ years of hands-on technical experience in systems engineering
  • 5+ profit and loss responsibility at some level
  • Direct experience with remote sensing satellite development and/or mission operations
  • Proven track record managing technical development for space-based systems
  • Experience working with U.S. Government DoD, Intelligence Community, and Civil customers
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to build and scale a mission management team
  • Experience with proposal development and supporting large competitive captures
  • Excellent understanding of systems engineering processes and space system architectures
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced development environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to travel to Bay Area up to 20% of time
  • Able to obtain a security clearance

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Specific experience with sensor technology for space applications
  • Experience with Space Force or SDA program execution
  • Current and active security clearance
  • Experience scaling technical teams in a growing organization
  • Background in both government and commercial space programs.
